Okay i am currently thirty-two weeks pregnant but my sister is roughly five weeks pregnant. She went for her first ob appointment and they did a dating ultrasound. They found the sac but they couldn't find the baby inside the sac. The doctor told her hubby that there are two possibilities, one the baby is hiding in the fluid, or that there is no baby. Has this ever happened to anyone else or someone you know and how did everything turn out? Why would a baby not show up though they did a transvaginal exam too. I thought that these were better since she is so early. But I am tryng to prepare myself for the best and worst cases possible. I had a miscarriage but I was eight weeks along. I just need some feed back on what you think and why this may happen besides a chromosonal deffect or what. I know she does go back for another ultrasound at the end of next week but I just feel like I need more info because my family and I are worried to death about this whole situation. Please Help??!!??!

No bleeding or cramps nothing to suggest a possible miscarriage, she is even experiencing an increase in her morning sickness. I have had it with every pregnancy and she is getting it worst then I have had it anytime. I know that this is a good sign but I am still very, very worried about her and the baby. I just need truthful information and truthful experiences. Thank you.

I am 6 weeks and 2 days pregnant. I had an ultrasound last week at 5 weeks and 4 days. All we saw was the sac, and a yolk sac. The ultrasound tech and my OB told me this was completley normal and that the baby was too small to see at that point. Tell her not to worry unless she has bleeding and cramping, and congratulations.
Quoted from http://www.obgynsono.com/overview.html
"We can first see signs of a pregnancy at about 5.5 weeks, when, on transvaginal ultrasound, we will see a gestational sac in the uterus about 2 or 3 millimeters in diameter. Things change daily at this stage of pregnancy. A day or two later we see the yolk sac, and a day or two later the embryo. As soon as we can see the embryo we see the pulsation of the embryonic heartbeat."

Just wanted to add that my ultrasound was transvaginal as well.

I had this happened to me. It was my first pregnancy. I was 8 wks went to my first ultrasound and Doc told me they found sac but no baby. Meaning they could not find the baby's heartbeat.
I had to withdraw blood every 2 days to see if my hormones level rise. Usually if you are having a healthy preg hormone level would keep rising daily. In my case my hormone level were dropping. Inconclusion within couple of wks there was still no heartbeat.I ended you inserting medication in the vagina to force the miscarriage.
You stated that your sister is only 5 wks preg. This is to soon to see any heartbeat. Usually heartbeat does not show up until at least 6 wks or later. If you need additional infor regarding this you can email me I'll be more than happy to answer quesiton based on my experience.

I had an ultrasound at 6 weeks and he had to work at it a little because im a bigger woman but he did see both the sac and the baby and he did the regual ultrasound on the outside of the abdomen. I really hope everything is ok, but i wouldl prepare for the worst, it sounds like the sac and everything formed but not the baby. My fried had this happen a few months ago , They ended up doing a DNC, BUT now she is 6 weeks along same as me, and they did see a baby this time and heard the heart beat. So I wish your Sister Much Luck! Good Luck and God Bless your Familty.

This happened to me with my second pregnancy. I went in at about five weeks for an ultrasound and was told they were only seeing the sac and no baby. I was crushed. The doc actually told me he was fairly certain there was no baby. He was such an *** about it too. I was upset and crying and he acted as if nothing was the matter. He walked out leaving me in the room very worried and upset. I went in the next week and everything was fine. I have a healthy, beautiful boy to show for it. So, there is a possibility it is just too early and the baby is just too tiny.

I'll hope for the best for you and your sister.

Okay. I was at exactly 5 weeks 3 days on the 13th April and had my ultrasound :) You will just see the sac inside your uterus and two different pictures. No heartbeat until 6 weeks. it will just look like a little ball. You will start seeing a head and body shape within 10 weeks..that is my next scan. Best of luck. Hope all goes well!

I actually know someone who this just very recently happened to. She is about 7-8 weeks pregnant and goes in for an ultrasound and the doc tells her that the sac is growing but the baby is not. I don't know how common this is, but it happened to her as well.

I didn't have this happen to me but it happens. There would be no sac without a baby. The baby might be too small at this point. She is probably less than 5 weeks. Maybe 4 weeks. I know I ovulated late so my baby's gestional age is smaller than my LMP. So good luck.

It may be that she is in fact earlier then she thinks, so fingers crossed all will be ok next scan.

I miscarried at 7 weeks, but i had all my simptons till about a week after my miscarriage. I was further along than your sister. Not all miscarriage have bleeding and pain.

Hopefully i have helped.

Good Luck

The baby is still VERY tiny and I believe considered an embryo. They will be able to tell more from the next ultrasound, and if she hasn't been bleeding or anything, she should be okay.
