Why do we no longer hear sonic booms? I recall growing up in Houston, Texas in the sixties and seventies and the number of frequent sonic booms that happened. Why do we no longer hear them? A change in aircraft design? Someone please enlighten me.

Sonic booms (shock waves from exceeding the speed of sound in air) can cause damage and frighten animals, etc. Therefore, jet fighters avoid sonic booms near populated areas. The SST (supersonic transport or Concorde) was not permitted to make sonic booms over land.

because government regulations in an effort to reduce noise no longer allow super sonic flight over populated areas. Pilots practicing supersonic flight must do so in designated desert areas that have no one living in those areas
