"Candle wicks are normally made out of braided cotton, and may contain a stiff core. This core was traditionally made of lead, however lead wick cores have been banned in the U.S. for several decades by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, due to concerns about lead poisoning. Zinc is often used as a safer replacement for lead in this application. Other core stiffeners, such as paper and synthetic fibers may also be used." Thank you for asking

Originally wicks were made with what ever was available. In Europe, it was braided linen, Now the wicks are usually cotton, And yes you can do this using a double boiler. Back in the 60's the big thing was to use a half gallon paper milk carton for a mold, fill it with crushed ice and a heavy construction twine type cord and then pour melted wax over it. Have fun.

They are made out of cotton string and some have wire in them. They are special, you can't just use any string for a candle. A hobby shop will have it or a candle making kit. The wick makes the cande burn slowly or fast as well as smoke or clean burn. So, be careful.

They are made of different things. Some of the wicks have lead in them, so be careful you don't get one of those since lead is posionous. A craft store should have wicks for sale.
