What is the meaning of the black and white scenes at the beginning of the Season 4 L-Words?

I don't get it; they appear to have nothing to do with the episodes. What's this about?

FYI - If you don't know, the L-Word is a show about lesbians; that's why I'm asking here. You are the crowd who's probably watched it.

Just_ine knows the answer to this question she explained it a couple of weeks ago. Some of the stuff I noticied like during season 3 had to do with the past, in the actors life.
