I don't buy that whole "Stockholm Syndrome" rhetoric. If he was younger when he was kidnapped, I could buy it, but 11? Most 11 year olds nowadays are smart enough to know about these kinds of people. I myself was molested from when I was 6 to when I was 8. I never said anything cause my molester (my biological fathers brother), threatened to kill me and my family. He never actually touched me until the end of the two years, he just mentally tortured me by not allowing me food or any other necessities while I spent my weekends there unless I let him "do things" to me. I never did. After two years, he tied me to a bedframe and raped me. Thats when I came forward. Its been 22 years since then and I have been in therapy since. Several years ago I found out my older brother was also molested by the same guy just a few years before me and he never said anything. He let me go into that house knowing what was awaiting me. He is no longer my brother. I would die before I would let that happen to another person. Some people just don't care. Did Shawn care about Ben? No, or he would have taken action, like Steven Stayner did. I think Shawn was not happy at home. On Oprah he was all "made over" and kept looking to his parents for approval on what to say. I don't think he was molested. No way someone would stay and endure that torment when given so many oppurtunities to escape.

This preditorial kidnapper probably threatened him and his family if he did or said anything. That's what they usually do. The instill fear into the minds of these kids and that makes them petrified to disobey their captor. Plus, I'm guessing that after being raped repeatedly by a member of the same sex he probably felt ashamed (as most rape victims do). Maybe he was too embarrassed to try to go home because he didn't want people to know that he was having sex with a guy. Even though it clearly wasn't his fault, it's hard to convice kids/rape victims of this. It really messes with their minds.

It's called the Stockholm Syndrome in which the hostages/kidnapped victims become sympathetic to the hostage takers/kidnappers. Check out the link below for more details.
I have a steadfast rule that I follow: always blame the offenders/perpetrators, never the victims.

Stockholm Syndrome kept him there.
What I want to know is why he had a makeover. When they found him he looked like a regular 15 year old. Then I saw him on TV done up like the picture on the posters.
That seems stranger to me.

He was scared to death after being threatened with his and his familys' life. What would even make you think an 11 year old would "fall in love" with anyone who would abuse him, mentally and physically ?

He was brainwashed. There's actually a term for people who are kidnap victims who, after a period of time, begin to sympathize with their kidnappers. Of course, I can't think of it right now.....

stockholm syndrome, they begin to empthize with captor and he stayed because he needed his captor to survive. this doesn't mean he didn't want to leave and that he wasn't scared, he had just become accustom to it maybe. hard to say, i feel so sorry for shawn i pray that he will eventually be alright.
