Yeah, that is a good car.

I would offer them $1500 though. Ask them the last time the timing belt was changed and you might want to spend $50 or so to take it to a mechanic and have it looked over. Those are good cars though.

The MX-6 is probably the least reliable car Mazda has made apart from maybe turbo rotaries. That still puts it ahead of a lot of other cars.

If it's in good shape, that's an okay deal, but they're mediocre cars.

Check carsurvey.org. You'll find more frowny faces for the MX-6 than just about anything Mazda's made. That's still not many, but frankly there are better cars out there. Also if you are still thinking of the MX-6, the Ford Probe is mechanically the same, but better-looking.

Mazdas are generally very reliable cars (look at the Miata...one of the most reliable cars ever made), this just happens to be less reliable than the others.

Sounds like a good deal price wise.

But there are questions you need to Ask the seller when looking the car over to purchase it.

Look the car over and test drive.
Looking at the car look for repaint or damage. Look under the car and under the hood. Even if you don't know what your looking at.
Test Drive
Forward and reverse movement, Turn sharp to listen to the axles (CV joints) make sure they don't pop and make other weird noises. Look at the tires. Exhaust Smoke? Smell?

List of questions, Example When was the last time the Timing Belt replaced ? ((needs replaced ever 60000 miles)) Fuel Filter, Spark plugs, Brakes frt or rear. Look for oil leaks or coolant leaks.

You can also ask about wrecks and fenderbenders. Look under the dash also for signs of repair or wiring problems,, like stereo etc...

Good Luck... Making an offer is a great Idea...
I bought a 1993 V6 auto for 990.00 she was asking 2200.00 She hadn't done any servicing and bad tires. I put 500.00 in it tags, tax, also engine & trans servicing and 280.00 for new tires. Drove it 15000 miles and Sold it for 2500.00.. Cheap parts, New or Used and easy to work on. Great 2nd car. I'm working on another Focus Ztec now...

no, no no no no. I bought a 93 ford probe gt (mx6) in 2001 for $3000 with 36,000 miles.
After 100,000 miles, they are very expensive cars to own, and parts are hard to comeby.
If the car is original, this is what your going to need to replace soon-Transmission (very weak transmissions man/auto), ignition, alternator, water pump, belt tentioners, head gaskets, brake calipers, and distributer.
The engines themselves are pretty reliable. But if you ever have a problem with it, and cant do the work yourself, your going to be looking for a mechanic everywhere. I blew the tranny, and had no place to work on replacing it, so i spent a week finding a mechanic that would replace it, and the mazda dealer actually told me he wouldnt touch my car.
If i found another deal like i did the first time, i would buy another one. $1900 for 140,000 ... if it had a rebuilt tranny, new disty, ignition, water pump, belt tentioners, and calipers... id offer them $1400.

ALL Mazda vehicles are unreliable and very costly to repairs. it will cost you alot of incovience and be prepare to drain the saving account. Mazda vehicles value depreciate so fast which is a hint that nobody want to buy them which is why the price you describe is so low. i guarantee you that if you look under the vehicle on the hoist, you will see alot of fluids leak, start the car when cold and you will see smoke, and worn suspension parts.. these are the most common problems

Do a Car Fax on the V.I.N. to make sure it has a clean and clear
title. Have a mechanic look at it too before you agree to buy it.
Look up the value in your area on Edmund's website...
