why cant you use a touchpad on a laptop with anything but ur hand? i mean if u try to get the mouse to move using something like a pen or something it just doesnt react.

Touchpads work by capacitance (just like touch-sensitive lamps). In the touchpad there is a grid of very thin wires running through a sheet of mylar (the part you touch). Your finger is a good conductor, so when you touch the pad, you actually cause a small flow of electrons between the wires. There is special circuitry that not only detects this small current flow, but also determines the speed and direction you are moving your finger across the pad (and across the grid). It feeds these signals to the microprocessor which (via a set of software instructions) moves the mouse pointer on the screen in relation to your finger's movement.
Other items don't cause it to move as they either don't conduct or don't have the right conductivity to be detected.

cuz mouse pad it heat sensitive...
