I've been doing some Pre-Calc homework and tried doing a certain problem a few times and still can't come up with the right answer. The promblem is 7(3X+6)=11-(X-2). I usually do pretty well with math but I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong with this problem. The first time I did it, I got -2 and the second time, I got -3, but the back of the book says the answer is -2/3. Help, please!

7(3X+6)=11-(X+2).

This distributes to be 21x + 42 = 11 - x - 2

21x + 42 = 9 - x

add x to both sides and subtract 42:

22x = 9 - 42 = -33

divide by 22 and get

x = -33/22 which reduces to -3/2

So the book is wrong.

For whatever it's worth, here's what I'm getting:

7(3x+6) = 11 - (x - 2)
21x + 42 = 11 - x + 2
21x + 42 = 13 - x
22x + 42 = 13
22x = 13 - 42
22x = 29
x = 29/22

7(3X+6)=11-(X+2).

21x + 42 = 11 - x - 2

21x + 42 = 9 - x

22x = 9 - 42 = -33

x = -33/22 which reduces to -3/2

So the book is wrong.

7(3x+6)=11-(x-2)
21x+42=11-x+2
22x+42=11+2
22x+42=13
22x=-29
x=-29/22

??

7(3[-2/3]+6)=11-([-2/3]-2)
7(-2+6)=11-([-2/3]-2)
7(4)=11-(-8/3)
28=11+8/3

THIS IS NOT EQUAL WHEN YOU PLUG IT IN.

Are you sure you copied the problem correctly?
