Sputnik is Russian for fellow traveller. It's the name they gave the world's first artificial satellite which they launched in 1957. It was spherical, a little bit bigger than a soccer ball, with six equidistant radio aerials sticking out. It was in a low Earth orbit and took about 90 minutes for an orbit. It transmitted a beeeep everythree seconds or so on 20.0005 MHz to prove it was there.

The first satellite shot into Earth's orbit. It was Russian...this started the Space Race between the U.S. and Russia.

I was a little girl when it went up (5 yrs old) and I had a little kitten that I named Sputnik after the satellite. My little kitten died . . . but I have never forgotten either the kitten or the name of the first space satellite!
