depending on your religion the roles vary.
.the pastor, father, priest will have the godparents step forward when the child is being baptized promising to raise the child spiritually.
some people throw the title around maybe wanting them (the godparents)to raise the children if anything happens to the parents. but that also needs to be outlined in a will.
I'm a "godmother"to a boy and a girl but i call myself their earth mother.(my friends aren't very religious so i don't push my own beliefs onto them)
i will spoil them, educate them, be there for them and just love them. I'm another shoulder for them to cry on another person to lean on.

You are officially a Godmother when you participate in a christening or baptismal ceremony with the parents and child and sign the baptismal or christening certificate. This is a symbolic role only and has no legal obligations or rights. You are expected to take a role in the child's life, primarily as a "moral compass" and being a good example of how to behave. Also, visiting frequently, maintaining a relationship with the child and giving great gifts both on all of the appropriate holidays and just for no reason at all!

God mothers are normaly supposed to take care of the child if the parents fail in their duties as parents, basicly godmothers are like loving aunts that spoil the kids, and in the wake of something bad that happens where the child has nowhere else to go the godmother should step up and take over as a parent to the child.

As far as I know (and I could be wrong), I think that the role of a god parent is to take care of the baby in case something happens to you and your husband/boyfriend... The best this to do is to make a will. A basic will is pretty cheap (around $200.00). After having a baby that is the number 2 thing you and your husband/boyfriend should take care of. Number 1 is life insurance! Good luck!

You choose a Godparent if your are getting your child baptized, which usually happens in the first few months after your baby is born. There is nothing legal about it, it is just someone you appoint to be a positive influence in your child's religious upbringing.
