The United States had the ability so sit back and watch while Europe slaughtered itself for the first 3 years. Canada entered the war the day Great Britain declared war on her behalf. So, Canada was supplying men and supplies from the beginning in 1914. America because of a general isolationist attitude toward a very European Conflict, had time to prepare for her entry into the conflict. It was inevitable America would become involved despite the popular thought. It was only a question of "when". So with the sinking of the unarmed passenger Liner Lusitania with the loss of over 100 American Lives, it became apparent to all America would be fighting in Europe. And so the country had time to train troops, make plans, review the battle plans and faults of other countries fighting and enter the War with fresh troops, better supplies and a new view of the way modern warfare was conducted. Remember, when the war began, no one participating thought it would last long. No one anticipated the deadly results of the new machine gun, gas warfare, the effectiveness of the airplane in war or the destructiveness of the U-boat. Many started the war on horses leading the charge like the days of old against Napoleon. This tactic did not last long. War had changed as did the weapons and America, had time to review all of this and learn from the mistakes of others before entering into the European War in 1917.
