Well some dark anime that I can think of is X 1999 that one is probably a classic in terms of it's dark story, especially episodes near the end. Vampire Princess Miyu has more of a dark tone artistically, as well as Vampire Hunter D. Hellsing's a quite dark anime, probably any episode could give you good scenes. the movie Akira also. Rurouni Kenshin ova (Samurai X) The first ova was quite dark and violent that's another one you could try. Not sure if it's easy to find but Peacock King Spirit warrior had dark tones and a dark story and is worth trying as well as Vampire Wars and Ninja Scroll.

Trinity Blood has gorgeous animation. Any episode you pick would have lots of AMV material as would Wolf's Rain. They both have that overall dark tinge to the colors and would blend well with Death Note's color scheme. The last two episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion might work too.

Violence Jack is a good one but very hard to find in some places because it is still censored because of the dark themes, read a overview on the wikipedia link i'm giving you.

yeah i'm not really a fan of dark anime, but some that i DO like are
Witch Hunter Robin, Elfen Lied, Death Note, new moon chronicles Tsukihime. Tsukuyomi.

Long ago I watched an anime called Ninja Resurrection.
There's only two episodes... would've been nice if there were more but...
Just two episodes...
If you watch it, you'll probably understand why.
They went too far.
