Night terrors are not dreams, it's more of a state of panic and fear...so when they wake up, they don't really remember a dream, like you would with a nightmare, and they are usually moaning or gasping upon awakening.

My son had night terrors for about a year.
He would sit up in bed and just scream, this usually went on for 5to10 minutes.
His eyes were open and in the morning he didn't remember a thing.
I've had nightmares, they were nothing like that.
The worst thing about them is that you can't do anything.I just sat there holding him till he went back to sleep.
Big difference.

A nightmare is a bad dream. A night terror is when you wake up but are still paralyzed because your body is still in sleep mode.
