I know the first step is: (48x^2y+12xy) + (5z+20xz)

I forgot the y in the first one and I switched the other around.

I'm going by your "first step," 'cause I think you have a typo in your main question... if not, we might have a problem....

12x(4x+y)+5z(4x+1)

Looking at the first set of parentheticals, you need to pull out all the common factors. They both can be divided by 12 and x, so we pulled out the 12x. Same thing with the second set, they could both be divided by 5z, but you need a place holder, so put the "1" there.

I hope that answered your question!!

48x2y + 20xz +12xy + 5z
=(48x^(2)y+12xy) + (20xz+ 5z)
=12xy(4x+1) + 5z(4x+1)
=(4x+1)(12xy+5z)

Man I love Factoring!

=(4x+1)(12xy+5z)

Ta-da! Factoring is sooo much fun, eh? ^^

Did you type in the problem correctly? I don't understand the 48x2y part. You also have a typo in your first step. I can answer this question, but I think you need to rewrite it.
