Pay attention to what your inner critic is saying and actually write out the criticisms. Then write out a rational response to the criticism and a more positive statement.

For example:
Critic: "You (or I) am ugly."
Response: "I may not be the most beautiful person in the world, but I do have some nice features."
Positive statement: "I make the most of the features I've been given."

Try reading the book "The Power of Now". To help explain that the mind is a tool that YOU use, that you don't let it use YOU. To learn to cancel out any negative thoughts that it tries to feed you.
