Well, there used to be canals on Mars (popularised in USA by Percival Lovell, a famous astronomer who organised and financed the search that led to the discovery of Pluto).
So, there used to be canals on mars; then astronomers got better telescopes and the canals went away.
After that, there were ice caps and places that got wet when the ice caps melted. Then we sent probes and saw craters and dry deserts where we expected vegetation.
Then we saw a face (in 1976). Sent better cameras (in 2001) and the face turned out to be a mountain.

PS:
For a nice "face on Earth"
on Google Earth
50˚00'36.3"N 110˚06'46.5" W
go down to altitude 7500 ft.
Notice the iPod speaker in his ear.
Also, in his hair, above his forehead, there seems to be a second face, smaller and with horns?

In 1976, the Viking orbiters returned the famous image of a rock formation on Mars that resembles a human face. It is in fact known as "The face of Mars" as you have mentioned. But more recent photos taken by the Mars Global Surveyer craft under different lighting conditions show the "face" for what it really is- a trick of the light

The "Face on Mars" is nothing more than an optical illusion created by some hills/mountains. Shadows can create illusions that fools the eyes easily.
The "Face" has been featured in many science fiction novels. One of those novels/series is Area 51 by Robert Doherty. It is a fun read.

I think the Face of Mars is really cool, just like the image of a heart on Mars. Sure its a bunch of rocks or sand and dust blown a certain way. But how cool!
Its what it makes you imagine when you see it that's important, not so much of what its made of.
Imagination is the key.
These are cool websites below.

It means that people put way too much stock in old pictures.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Face_on_Mars
"a detailed analysis of multiple images of this feature reveals a natural-looking Martian hill whose illusory face-like appearance depends on viewing angle and angle of illumination."[1] More recent pictures by the Mars Global Surveyor seem only to confirm the validity of this scientific opinion."

But how do we know the later pictures weren't faked to make us all believe there's nothing there ? It would be nice to think there's really a face there, left behind by an ancient race of Martians. Guess we'll never really know until someone goes there. Any offers ?

Sure it's real. It's a real rock formation on Mars. But it's not anything more unless you have a bad case of paredolia or listen to Coast to Coast WAYYYY too much.

Even Hoagland has fell off the band wagon on that one and he was it's strongest proponets.
The simplist answers are normally the correct ones..we tend to create ghost where there are none. Its just a hill. I wish it was otherwise..but I had to give it up too. But there's still UFOs and lizard people!!!

It is no more significant that the faces we sometimes think that we see in the clouds. It fun to look for them. It stimulates our imagination. Beyond those things, there is no meaning.
