Registered Nurse here; Seems more and more people are sufferring from insomnia, especially here in the 21st century. Here are some of the things I do, for I to have trouble going to sleep, then wake up after an hour or so. I try to walk of a evening, not fast just walk amount the outdoors and try and clear my mind of whatever events or tragedies may be going through it. I also drink decaffinated drinks after 4 pm, I found drinking caffeine does affect my sleep or like of. LOL! not funny, but sometimes we have to laugh to keep from crying. I also take two tylenol just before I go to bed, I know you ask for sleep without pills, but the tylenol seem to assist. I turn the ringers off of all the phones, except my private line, which would be the hospital calling me to work, or a family member. I turn the TV off about 15 to 30 minutes after getting in bed. I also try to think of the most tranquill place my mind can find, not always successful, however I don't want to take anything stronger than tylenol and I don't want something that makes me feel drug out. However lack of sleep makes me very tired and drugged out, so I'm not sure what the lesser of the two evils would be, taking a sleep medication or doing without sleep. Herbal teas, warm milk, coca, all claim to help relax one. I do have one of the above each night after my bath, then go to bed. Hope this helps and thanks for the opportunity to address your question.

Oh man. I know just how you feel. Last week I didn't get to sleep before 2am once. Not even Saturday night after a skinful which is the only way I can normally guarantee a good nights sleep. However I do have a remedy that works sometimes.
Lie on your back with your arms at your sides.
Think about your toes, really focus on them then imagine them becoming weightless, floating upwards. Then do the same with your feet, knees, thights, bum, back, head then your arms working from your shoulder down to fingers.
When you have done this and, theoretically, your whole body feels like it's floating start from your toes again but this time they feel really heavy and are sinking down into the bed. Do the same with feet, knees etc until your whole body feels like a dead weight. You should be now feeling really sleepy and ready to drop off.
Sometimes this works well, it did last night.
Hope it helps

Total exaustion is the fastest, but unfortunatly the most work too, I can almost sleep anytime all ya have to do is start dreaming, like here let me get ya started with one of mine, I get this urge one day maybe tomarrow to buy a lottery ticket and the girl behing the counter is rely pretty and seems nice enough so I tell her if I win I will remember her and ect ect. the key here is your imagination the more detailed and the longer ya strech it out the quicker it works, in other words ya never get to the live happily ever after thing ya just add more details and before ya know it there's that darn alarm haha, hay you can always imagine doing the most borring day you ever lived over again that will put anyone to sleep. and if ya like I got a great way to stay awake for days too. just think of something that makes ya mad or that ya have troble understanding.

I have the same problem as you, the unability to sleep at night...
You can try reading a book and try to tire out your eyes. Dont get too much of a fascinating book because that'll just make you want to keep reading! Maybe listening to soft music or watching a little bit of tv. You can also try the classic 'counting sheeps'. You can also try eating turkey! I know it might sound stupid, but theres this thing in turkeys that make you sleepy right after. Thats why (sometimes) people fall asleep right after eating a thanksgiving dinner.

1. Exercise, but not too close to bed time.
2. Quit the caffeine.
3. Force yourself to get up at the same time every morning, no matter how tired you are.
4. Don't nap during the day.
5. Don't use your bed for anything, but sleep and sex

Maybe you worry too much. You should try to tell your self you did everything you could to make the best out of the day and all the worries of tomorrow leave to God to deal with. Then there wont be anything on your mind and you'll be able to rest peacefully having faith that you are in good hands.
