what if some guy became enraged at your girlfriend/ wife and you were not sure if he would hit her or not? What if he called her a slut? What if there was no witnesses? what if there was witnesses? what if the witnesses were his friends? And let's suppose you had a job where the public would frown on offenses such as assault for someone in your position such as a doctor, care for the elderly, child care, etc. You could even possible lose your job.
Keep in mind: You can be found guilty of assault and sent to jail if you fight. Also, verbally starting something usually ends up in physical fighting with these types of people.
What would you do in these different scenarios?

no, walking away is an option. Your girlfriend/wife might think you are a hothead for not standing up for her whether it be verbally or physically and possibly leave you. The bottom line is: would you risk going to jail and losing your career over your girlfirend or wife?

Well, if the guy is going to hit a woman, he isn't too tough is he? So he wouldn't be worth me losing anything for him. And if he hit me first, then I have every right to hit him back, don't I? That is self defense.
Basically, words are words, and nothing more. If a guy calls a person anything, it is only as powerful as the "victim" allows it to be. So I wouldn't have issue with him unless he hit me.
Of course, this is all if I was a guy. I don't have a wife or a girlfriend (though my husband wouldn't mind if I had a girlfriend. . . I am sure you know the rest).

Not fight and take the wife/girlfriend and get out of the situation. Fighting is not worth it, people can really get hurt! If someone hits your wife/girlfriend in front of you, you need to go to the police and get him for assault. If she has a bruise/mark then they can use you as a witness..

At any rate, you should keep your hands to yourself. So should he. If he actually assaults her, do what you have to in order to stop it without escalating the situation more than necessary. File a police report.

Why is walking away not a viable option here? Say you deck the guy, and there's no assault charge!--but weeks later you find your car's paint job 'screwdrivered,' then a basement window broken, then your cat dead, then your backyard grill upside down... ?
