Let's say, about, 8:30-ish (in the morning, obviously.)

It's for an essay for English.

The pros and cons of starting school at a later time will differ depending on the age of the student. The pros for middle and high school students starting early are that they are self sufficient and can wait in the dark at the bus stops alone. The con is that their biorhythms are such that they require a vast amount of sleep and their bodies are changing more rapidilly than ever and they need additional sleep. Most elementary students are wide awake earlier than high school students thus it is a pro for them to start earlier, on the con side they are younger and walking to the bus in the dark winter months could be dangerous.

It is true that younger people's body clocks are naturally set to be awake later and sleep later, so teenagers especially have a hard time focusing in the early hours. The later in the day (well, not past noon) the better as far as attention to and retention of lessons. Also, many students don't eat breakfast, another hurdle to learning is low blood sugar, so later classes would leave time for a meal.

Cons? Teachers wouldn't have as much afternoon time to prepare the next day's lessons, grade papers, etc., and students would have less time for homework.

IMO the pros outweigh the cons, but that's just me...

The circadian rhythm for teenagers is different than for adults. Students in high school tend to not even feel tired until around 11:00pm. As a result, if they have to go to class at 7:00am, they probably got up at 6:00am, and they only got 7 hours of sleep, instead of the 9 hours that students are supposed to get. If students went to school at 8:30 they could get almost 9 hours of sleep.

The pros would be that you get more sleep and you'll get more accomplished because the brain doesn't start properly functioning until the afternoon.

The cons would be that you get out of school later and get home later. It might also interfere with your social life and homework time.
