Brian's partially correct. It isn't rocket science, but it can be difficult to get the new wick in correctly, and can be very messy and smelly. If you're bound to do it yourself, lite the unit and burn all the kerosene out. Let the flame go till it goes out by itself. Then take the 3 screws that hold the top on, out. If you do it this way, you can take the entire top off without having to take the cage off. It should just lift off once the screws are out. When you have the wick area open, you'll have to take the 4 wingnuts off their posts and that should release the wick adjuster assembly so that you can lift that off.
Before you life the adjuster assy. off, get a bucket or put a towel down somewhere so that you can lay the complete unit on it without soaking the place down with kerosene.
Thoroughly clean the sides of the center post and the top, where all the little holes are. These are important to the way the flame burns when you put it back together. They need to be open, they're not there just for decoration.
Pry the old wick loose from the small sharp pegs on the inside of the wick carrier and make not of where the old wick set in relation to the top of the carrier. There should be a line on the new wick and instructions with the package that tell just how to position the new wick. Put it in and reassemble the wick adjuster unit back onto the center post in the reverse order of how you took it off. Run it all the way to the top of it's adjustment travel and check to make sure the wick is above the level of the top. It should stick up between 1/8" - 1/4". At this point, I've found it advantagous to soak the new wick with fresh, clear K-1 kerosene and I mean really soak it. I use a small bulb syringe to put the kerosene directly onto the top of the wick. Put the wing nuts back on, the top back on and reinstall the screws. Then put approx. 1 gal. of clear kerosene in the tank and let it soak up from the bottom of the wick for about an hour. It should lite up and burn with a bright yellow flame.
