Reader's Digest has tons of opportunities for all different kinds of short stories and they might even pay you a couple of bucks.

Library has a reference book, Writer's Market, that lists all publishers of every kind of literary work. Probably available online because what isn't these days? Contests are also listed in that and other publications. Also, Literary Marketplace, the best of them, is available at your library. Every book store has a bunch of books for sale to teach you how to submit and to whom. Generally, you read the magazines and submit work that will "fit" their line. It takes a lot of research and a lot of rewrites (hard work) to get professional enough to impress the professionals who are looking for material. No short cuts. Unless you write a graphic sex comedy about teens. Schlock always sells but be aware that you also get a reputation in the publishing world and they won't touch your "legit" stuff.
