the question of free will, on whicjh, if you think about it, evertying we think about as inherently human is based on. Example: dignity, responsibility, morality, ethics, punishment, value, quality. Without free will, we are reduced to mere characters in a video game, playing out their role, which was predetermined for them. Dont get me wrong, these characters still have the ILLUSION of free will, which is the key, really. Here s the twist though, what if we really are just characters in a video game? If our behavior, as scientists tell us, is indeed the product of genes and environment, and their interaction, then what free choice do we really have? to put it in a simpler way, say someone was born with anti social genes( proven to exist) and say this same person also grew up in a volent home environment? Then if this person one day becomes a criminal, can we really blame him? Oue entire system and society are based on this crucial idea of choice between good and evil, when in reality, things might really, be outside of our control. You can see, then, that morality is very relative. By the way, this is why religion is so popular and universal, in my opinion. It combines two extremes and provides a happy comforting middle ground. The two extremes are absolute freedom, and absolute lack of it. If there is free will, then we are free and responsible for everyting that happens to us. If there isnt, then we are just marionettes, puppets, acting out our destinies. However, when the idea of God is introduced, we have the best of both worlds - we still have choice, however this choice is not random and devoid of any meaning( which it would be if there was no concept of God aka absolute good/absolute evil) Thus, we are free, but ultimately, not so free in the end(afterlife) With religion, we are free to act, but our actions still have some kind of meaning and value attached to them.
Now, the question arises, what about one who doesnt believe in religion? This individual struggles with the two extremes:
1.meaningless freedom
2.paralyzing, dehumanizing lack of free will
The only aternative seems to be the idea of existentialism. Existentialists accept the relativity of all things( morality, values, ethics) and they try to create meaning out of the world for themselves. They live assuming there is free will and try to find good and bad for themselves, without accepting what society imposes on them through religion or any other system of thought.

I hope this helps, although the clarity of my answer could have been much better.

In 60 years I will not be alive. Does the universe have a beggining? Is the universe infinite in length? Or does it have a stopping point? Why do people do such horrible things when they are exactly like me?

The probability of you being born is so big if you started writing it you would probably die before you finished.

To the above answer we became humans after first bacteria formed into fungus. Then formed into plant's and tree's and so on and so on. Until your are at the present day we are now. Study evolution it is very interesting and explains it all. Dont believe the propaganda against it. Evolution is mostly scientific fact. It had been proven with fossil records. And you can see current examples of adaption in bacteria that are now becoming immune to antibiotics. I reccomend the selfish gene by richard dawkins. Itll get you started on your way to understanding.

wouldn't it be nice if there was just one thing, one question....but there isn't!! there are so many never ending ever-complicating question marks all over people and places and happenings. I'm just one of those people who is diseased with thinking and over -thinking everything. Everything is a question and sometimes it gets old, real old and I want to ignore it all. What makes me think??...when people do bad things to other people, when people don't feel sorry, when people are selfish....But what makes me think the most is when I sit at the beach at 2 in the morning with no one but myself and I look at the sky and at the sea and I hear the wind and the waves and wonder to myself how could someone miss out on this? why are people watching TV or surfing the web or partying and getting drunk and useless? then other times I think its ok that they are doing what they're doing because I need a get away from all those people and if they had an access to my escape I wouldn't have an escape. I think its the quiet that makes you think....the silence inside of you always asks questions.
What makes you think?

How to overcome any addiction: Just don't do it.
That pretty much cancels out years of psychologists and therapy. It's what the "psychologists" don't want you to know. It's really that simple.

Life, true life, is so simple even a child can live it. Live like a child with God as your Father and you will find life.
