My husband and I are planting a garden for the first time this year. We live in Northwestern California. We would like to do "basic" veggies like tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, squash and cucumber. Any advice appriciated.

I should also mention that we are not starting from seed, but rather pre-started plants. thanks.

After the last frost, or risk of frost, has passed. The sooner you get going after that, the sooner and longer you will get a crop yield.

Plant your garden after the last frost. If in doubt, keep the plants near a window where they'll get indirect light and give them plenty of water.
Squash grow just as fast from seed, as well as cucumbers. Just follow the directions on the package.

Call your County Agent, they have a detailed list of time ranges for each type plant. Things like Okra do better planted a little late. Things like English Peas, Potatoes, and Kale for instance can go in a little before the frost free date.
Find a gardener in your area that has been successful for many years and seek their advice.

I just started a garden last year, and had a satisfying, if late crop of green beans.
I found the on line farmer's almanac to be very helpful, and plan to use it as a source of help this year, as well.
Happy Gardening!

After the last frost. You should be able to find that information at a garden shop.
