"Asbestos" is the word you're looking for. Fibers from a stone, serpentine, were drawn out and "woven" into a sort of "cloth."
The cloth was pressed with binding materials, and used in a variety of applications, such as insulation, and even for house siding. The problem is that as the material aged, small bits of the asbestos fibers would be shed. They were carcinogenic if inhaled.

Up until a few decades ago, just about every building built used asbestos as an insulator because it was fire retardant. Just recently, there's been a big scare about it and people have been rushing to get rid off the stuff, although as long as you don't tamper with it, it isn't dangerous.
