Chess is a more complex game, and requires more skill to be good at it. Plus, chess is a game of pure skill, unlike backgammon, which relies to a certain extent on luck, as any dice game would.

Backgammon is a much easier game to learn.

Backgammon does require some strategy, and a knowledge of dice probability is helpful. The other good thing about backgammon is that it's a much faster game (a typical game between players who know what they're doing usually lasts less than 10 minutes), so you can play several games in a relatively short period of time. And it is a fun game to play, it just doesn't require the same kind of skills as chess does.

I prefer Chess, but with chess.. the biggest drawback is that one person within a group (ie, a family, fraternity, sority....) one person will become very good, making it very boring to play for the other members... and the game will rarely be played after the initial learning stage. The exception would be, if 2 people are skilled rather closely together... This will make the game more enjoyable for a longer period of time, as they continually compete against each other. Another great board game of skill and strategy would be the game "Go" (Weiqi). I actually prefer Go over Chess.

Backgammon is a good game for "families" because Backgammon has a degree of chance, just about anyone can play and win, making it fun for people that are not particularly skilled.

It depends on your objective.

If you want a deep thought out game, where the better player at the time always wins. Chess is better.

If you want to meet woman or gamble, backgammon wins hands down.

The best board game? Well...that too depends. For me, it's been chess, because I like the mental stimulation. For socal games, Settlers is very good.

it's a perfectly working link, no scam!
It?s true that if you search for computer games you can find all kinds. Some of these are quite appealing, and others aren?t, but you can still find programs that offer special and unique content; like when you used to play on those Sunday afternoons sitting down to the best board games. This is the case with GNU Backgammon, a game that will immediately transport you back to those good times.
