Actually, they do help. I used to do maintenance at some apartments. The hallways were long and dark, even with the lights on, so the vacuum cleaner bulb did help. But still, it didn't seem bright enough. I think they try to make the vacuums too cute, and hiding the bulb behind a lot of bezel diminishes the brightness. If they want to use bulbs, why not a number of super bright white LEDs across the front?

I don't think so. I do not vacuum in the dark. Perhaps they put it on so that if your vacuum is broken, it can help you diagnose the problem: say, the light works, but it does not suck. If this is happening with your vacuum, it may help the vacuum repair man figure out what is wrong with it. Maybe they put the light there in case you need to vacuum in a dark area, such as a closet or a cabinet. Maybe it is for use in a hall that is not well lit, such as in a seedy hotel.

Yes, I wondered about the same question. I have green carpet in the apartment, and it helps just a slight bit when I vacuum under the table. So, my answer would be - in complete dark, maybe.

the vacuum light is to help you see things that might blend in with the carpent and be potentionally harmful to the vacuum, such as paper clips, coins, etc. Do this... in a lighted room, take a flashlight and walk around with it and look at your carpet, couch and alike. The beam of light will call attention to things that you otherwise might miss.

Ha Ha! I like the first guy's answer! Funny! But for your questions.....no it doesn't help me see where I am vaccuming, no it is not necessary, no I don't vaccume in the dark, no it doesn't work better on dark carpet, as I have it, naaaa, the light doesn't need to be brighter. Good question.

You know, I was just thinking the same thing on Friday when I was.... drum roll please... vacuuming. I was in my hall, and I didn't have the light on, and it was pretty dark, and I noticed that the light on my vacuum cleaner (a very nice Kirby) was utterly useless. Good thing I didn't buy it to light my way, or I would be pretty furious about the wasted money (Kirby's are pretty pricey!)

No, vaccuum lights aren't for seeing the carpet, or dirt on the floor. They are for on-coming vaccuums to see them so they don't collide.
