I'm looking into trying to become an auto sales consultant. I was just wondering what's it like on a normal business day and how hard is it really?

On a normal day depending on the dealership, you may get several customers, but mostly have down time. Good salespeople will try to generate their own leads through repeat business and referrals.

If you enjoy the work, it is not hard. If you hate to meet new people, this may not be for you. In addition you need to be extremely ethical and fair. Many people already believe the car salesperson is unethical and predatory.

My husband did it, he can sell ANYTHING to ANYONE and has a top notch record for top salesperson in the past... he dresses impeccably and is very well groomed and polite. It got him NOWHERE as a car salesman. The way it worked was that all the people that already worked there always got first chance at walk-in customers. Then, to top it off, when someone came in, they would first ask them "have you met with any of our consultants before?" and even if it was 10 years ago, THAT person would get paid for the sale that happened today, even if it was made by my husband. Too many politics and established salesman to give a new guy a chance... on the other hand, if you don't need to be making top money right off the bat like my husband did, and you can afford the measley training salary, you never know... The jobs are fairly easy to get, it's mainly appearance and good customer service skills, rather than your background. There is a very high turnover at most of the dealers due to the fact that it's so hard to get ahead of the established salesmen. If you interview, make sure you ask them about stuff like how they help you get new customers, is it a seniority thing, and if they give the ORIGINAL salesperson the commission even if YOU make the sale. I have a feeling they all work that way - which makes it very hard for a new guy to make a living in my opinion.

My wife was a salesperson for Nissan. She's very cute and loves to talk. But that's not enough. Management expected that everyone that came in wanted to buy a car. If she couldn't sell every customer that walked in, she was in trouble. There are a lot of people that want the job, and a lot of pressure to perform. After 3 months, she was the salesperson with the most seniority. In 6 months they canned her.

the main severe ingredient: the customer is often good. yet no longer in a literal sense. they are in a position to be a protracted way from good, however the assumption is to cause them to sense like they are good. it is crucial to starting to be respectable in sales. yet another ingredient is purely be personable. And be a farmer, no longer a hunter. Farmers domesticate their nutrients. They construct a beginning place of positive clientele and it will take countless stressful artwork with little payoff up front. Treating a shopper properly is fundamental to being a farmer. human beings hate procuring autos from a broking. in the event that they like procuring from you, they're going to come lower back to you or perhaps deliver referrals. Hunters are the vulchers who consume whilst hungry. they are people who suggestions-set a shopper until eventually now they get out of their vehicle. They hustle to get each and every deal. they often starve in the winter and characteristic a stressful time making it.
