Not really. He just never had any major opposition against him. He was autocratic and had total control of the airways and newspapers. There were no polls then and new was scarce in the U.S. His reelection 3 times had little to do with popularity and was probably as honest as GWB's first one.

YES He became a father figure. It was still the era when leadership was respected. He was admired also for intellegence and integrity, giving Americans hope and confidence thru the Great Deprssion and security and victory thru WWII.

Yes he was mostly very loved. Naturally there were people who disliked him, but overall he was one of the most popular presidents ever. He was elected to 4 terms.

Great question, I did not live then but they probably felt the same way about him as they feel about George Bush now.
