Happiness is when all those endorphins are swimming around in your brain. Unhappiness is lack of endorphins. What creates these hormones is different for everybody.

Pain gives unhappiness, relief from that pain gives happiness. Pain is the negative basis for the Judgment and the Will is positive. The relief from pain, the negation for that negativity is experienced as positive and therefor becomes the Will. Idea formed of that kind of posit, negation for negation, becomes one of that kind and the quantity of happiness is the success in removing that pain (fear) which is in its moment before that pain in being, actual being. Pain in non-being is as much a condition in unhappiness as is real pain, but they are incomparable. Pain of the internal nature of body and non-being in the mind are actually internal and have relation to externality through a mode for its relief or fulfillment. Successful action of that mode is happiness. The Spirit follows that action with its own.

Happiness is knowing what you like, and getting it. Unhappiness is the lack of that knowledge, or lack of the means (tangible or intangible) to attain it.
