what is the difference between ال and آل in a last name?
my arabic teacher told me that if your last name is آل then your a relative to Mohammed?

No my dear it doesn't mean that.
maybe your teacher wants to be funny. or, it depends on which Mohammed is your teacher talking about. There are millions people named Mohammed, it could be anyone of them. In this case it could be true.
ال AL means the. El or AL Malik. As in the King. The El is not the major, it what fellows. That does not have any indication whether a person is or is not related to Mohammed. If a person is related, that is not enough, and they have to study the family tree to find out for sure. I know one family that is related to Mohammed, it is the royal family of Jordan.

The first Al simply means "the". The second "AAL" simply alludes to the name of a tribe, i.e surname . There is no indication that this person is related to the prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him). In fact, those who are , are known and they are called Ash-shurafa'. Your Arabic teacher need to learn History.

not you teacher is wrong,ال is more common in families last name but اَل is used by some family like royal family and al sheikh(الشيخ) and some other families
