i just started med school, im double majoring in physical therapy, (my interest) and exercise science (a bonus) anyway my assignment is to create my own gym or program of exercise. so i came up with the idea of a fitness club for pregnant women and new moms - so my question is what equipment would you include, rules, requirements, additional things to take into consideration? any ideas you can throw at me will help!

Hi, I have been involved in setting up two specialised gyms in Australia. Also affiliated with 'Lets Go Girls' a group for socially disadvantaged mums to be or new mums.
Obviously the first thing is to assess each individuals health and health of the child...any complications from serious to simple odema?
Then tailor a program for that person and what they wish to achieve, such as movement, fitness or new mum belly and weightloss.
I have found the mums to like mat work and fitballs, they feel safe with a lower centre of gravity and aren't afraid of falling, although they may need a rail or chair to help them up. Therobands are great for simple stretching and pilates movement.
New mums usually like to get going to burn the baby kilos, but many forget about stretching and warming up. They also tend to do short bursts on equipment. You need to reinforce the need for cardio burn times eg 25 minutes in an elevated heart rate zone. Light toning is also good, free weights tend to require to much technique for this group, so so equipment may be needed to target the problem zones. Back strength is also extremely important for this group.
Another suggestion is co-locating with childcare facilities or near a local school.
Young mums groups also can be linked to encourage the mums to get out with their kids in strollers and - Lets Go Girls !!

I think a pool and a springy walking track would be the most essential things to have. Walking and swimming are the best exercises when you are pregnant

You wouldn't need any weights over ten pounds or any machine where you lift weights while lying on your back.

Any kind of class that taught low impact aerobics, yoga, light dancing, etc. would be perfect.
