beta strep is it. ok so there is a pelvic exam, I got that part but why is there an exam in that other region down there. My doc said my next appointment he would do this. Does every pregnant woman do this?

They found something earlier in my pregnancy and the doctor told me i would have to be put on antibiotics while in labor, to prevent passing something to my baby, its has to do with this beta strep infection.

this is done with every pregnancy around 34-37 weeks. Its only a test to see if there is a bacteria down there.....this bacteria is completely normal and comes and goes all throughout a woman's life however seeing as the baby passes well through down there, they have to test for it so they can treat you during labor so it doesn't go to the baby! oh and its called group b strep!
Its simple, just a swab, you wont even know its being done!

The Group B Strep test can be done with samples from the vagina, rectum, or both - I suppose it's up to the individual doctor how s/he prefers to get the sample. Some doctors tend to be more cautious than others and get samples from both areas - since, let's face it, they're pretty close together and the bacteria *could* travel from back to front (thus the reminders for women to always wipe front to back, etc.)

It's just a swab, though - about the size of a Q-tip - so hopefully it'll be no big deal for you (it wasn't for me.)

Congrats on your baby-on-the-way!

they more than likely found group b strep and if you don't have the antibiotics the baby could get very sick.. my youngest 2 were both hospitalized with late onset group b strep. one was 5 weeks with a 104.2 fever we were in the hospital in icu for 3 days.. the other one got the same thing but at 3 months and had a 103.7 fever and we were hospitalized for 7 days in isolation we had to scrub in and scrub out. i was given the antibiotics but they both came to fast to get enough of it in their system to keep them from getting... good luck
