My biology teacher has his little catch phrase "you forget 50% in 7 seconds" in order to get us to remember things faster. This is how I have perceived it, but is it really true? He says he learned it while he was in college but he doesn't seem too smart of a fellow so he might just be tricking us.

Yes you forget quite a bit, I don't know the exact percentage and I might even guess higher then 50%, but this is not a bad thing most of the time. At any given moment you are bombarded by a ton of information that you really don't have to remember, and it would just get in the way of things you need to remember. Like do you feel hot or cold, a smell in the room, what your teacher is saying, ... As a matter of fact to retain what your teacher wants you to retain you have to purposely ignore other things.

Yeah, but 50% (or more!) probably isn't worth remembering! I find it easy to remember the things that are important or relevant to my life.
When I was in school, I had to write down a lot of stuff so I could pass the test if the teacher wasn't very good. The better teachers presented things in such a way that I "learned" it immediately upon hearing it--- it made connections. With them, I didn't have to memorize meaningless things for a test-- things that I now no longer remember.
So his little catch phrase says more about his teaching methods, than about his students.

He's probably referring to how long you have to move it from short-term memory to long-term memory. Anything that doesn't make it is pretty much gone. Though the span of time is debated, it's generally accepted to be less than 30 seconds. He might be confusing this with the theory that humans can only memorize/sort/store seven distinct items (plus or minus two). This number comes into play in things such as interface design.
