Im 60, when I was a scout at age 8 we said the scout pledge, and it has changed but then it was.... I ,_____________________, promise to do my duty, to God and my country, to be square, and obey the laws of the pack.
In 1955 it meant honest and straight forward... The Beatniks of the late 50"s changed it so that by 1960, being square was nerdy.

that a 50's term for person who is a rule follower or is not "cool"
The term "square", in referring to a person, originally meant someone who was honest, traditional, and loyal. The evolution of American culture transformed the term from a compliment to an insult to an obsolete term

It depends on the context. In general, it's someone who does not think like you. It's a weak way to say "your different" and used by those who feel empowered by exclusivity.
It can also mean "on the up & up", or fair, as in "square deal."
Or, he's a square shooter. Someone that's not going to cheat you.
