Yeah. I'm semi-guilty of it today. First snow of the season and where did we go? The grocery store. We needed a lot more than bread and milk though. I guess people go for those items, because if it's like my house and family, you're always running low on them. You can use bread and/or milk to make a number of simple easy meals.

Experience of previous storms. Better to have extra milk and bread and not need it than to have none and have neighbours who are all out, as well. ; )
I live in Colorado and if it weren't for the fact that my husband's "car" is a 4X4 truck, we'd have spent several days during Christmas inside our house. We did grocery runs for a couple of friends who weren't able to get out, but we could get in to them. Here it is unusual, but cyclical, to have snow stay on the ground for this long.

force of habit from being brougth up as kids...they a perishable items and expire unlike can goods which last a long time if stored properly..milk will turn sour about 4-5 days after the sell by date and bread turns to mold about a week after it gets to the store

Don't forget the lineups at the beer store. Munchies are always high priority too. I live in a snow belt. As long as we have milk, bread, beer and munchies we're fine. Batteries, candles, survival stuff are for come-from-aways. We have all that already. As long as we have the perishables we're fine. Then we fire up the Ski-Doo.

The bread can be toasted and laid out under your tires for traction. I'm not sure about the milk though..

ha ha ha! Not only do they do in Georgia, they also buy out all the generators from Home Depot!
I don't know the importance of milk and bread...I would stock up on some coke and cigarettes :)

It's because they think it's the 1700's and they'll never get out of their house for a week. The items are staples we should have on hand.

I have not noticed that . It's odd. You'd think batteries etc, would go first. I guess it depends on where you live.
