A rectangular school hallway is to be tiled with 6 inch square tiles. The hallway is 72 feet long and 10 feet wide. Lockers along both walls narrow the hallway by 1 foot on each side. How many tiles are needed to cover the hallway floor. Answer: You will need 2, 304 6-inch square tiles for the hallway floor.

Total square footage is 72X10=720
Locker loss is 72X2=144
Net square footage is 576
Each square foot equal 4 tiles
576X4=2,304

The lockers come in from the wall 1 ft on each side, so we're really considering an area which is 72 ft long and 8 ft wide. How many square feet is that? You only need to multiply the dimensions to discover the area in square feet:
72 × 8 = 576.

Each tile is 6 in (half-foot). A picture can easily show that there's four tiles per square foot (though if you want to be rigorous, you can demonstrate how 144 in² divided by 36 in² is 4).

So 576 ft² × 4 tiles/ft² = 2304 tiles.

Since the lockers cover 1 foot on each size of the hallway, the hallway only needs 8 feet worth of tiles widthwise.
The area of the hallway is given by the following equation: 8 feet wide X 72 feet long = 572 square feet.
In one square foot, there are 144 square inches (12 inches wide X 12 inches long), and each tile covers an area of 36 inches (6 inches wide X 12 inches long). Therefore, 4 tiles will cover a square foot.
572 square feet X 4 tiles per square foot = 2304 tiles total.

The dimensions of your hall are

72' by 10'

It becomes 72' by 8' because of the lockers.

covert to inches to keep your units consistent

72*12= 864
8*12=96

so using the coversion to get square inches

864*96 = 82944 square inches

To get the total number of 6 inch square tiles, you use the total square inches 6*6 = 36 square inches per tile

divide the hall square inches by 36 to get the total number of tiles

82944/36 = 2304

You need 2,304 6-inch square tile to tile the hallway floor.

the hallway is 72 * 10 ft

If there are lockers on 2 walls, they will most likely be along the longer wall. So it cuts 1 ft from each side, so total 2 ft from 10 ft.

So now it is 8 ft by 72 ft.

8 * 12 inches is 96 divided by 6 inches is 16

72 * 12 inches is 864 divided by 6 inches is 144

144 * 16 = 2304

10 feet wide minus 2 feet wide (lockers) = 8 feet wide (new width measurement of the hallway) : 10 - 2 = 8
Now convert the 6" square tiles to a common foot measurement of 2 tiles per foot by showing it this way : 12/6 = 2 or 12 divided by 6 equals 2
Now show multiplication of length by width by 2 tiles per foot one of these three ways : (72L x 2t)x(8w x 2t)=2304t or 144 x 16 = 2304 or 2(72 x 16) = 2304

OK - ever hear of dimensional analysis? This is a good prob for it.

Find the total area of the hallway in feet squared (72 * (10-2)) (right?). Now, translate that into inches squared and divide by the area of one tile. That gives you the number of tiles.

With lockers your hallway will be: 72 feet long, and 8 feet wide.

two 6 inch square tiles = one square foot.

So it will take 16 tiles across and 144 tiles long to cover the floor

16*144 = 2304

A = 72(8) = 576sqft
Number of 6-inch tiles
576sqft/(1/2)^2sqft = 576 / (1/4) = 576 * 4 = 2304

72 *8=576
576*4=2304
There apparently were no doors in front of which tiles would be needed to cover the floor.

the hallway is 8ft by 72ft wide (with the lockers)

start by obtaining the area of the hallway
(72ft x 8 ft) gives 576ft^2
convert this to in^2
576ft^2 (12in/1ft)^2 = 82944in^2

divide this by the 6x6in^2 tiles
it gives 2304 tiles

=)
