+Iraq
+Child or spousal abuse,
+diet, exercise
+Olympics and/or animal rights.

Euthanasia.

Always makes people sit up and take notice.
Everyone either hates it or thinks it's a good idea.

Nothing in between.

Assuming your audience is of voting age, I would give a speech on the history of voting rights and make a case for why they should exercise their right to vote. It's a safe non-partisan issue that won't get anyone from either political party upset. Plus, while you're giving the speech, you may actually do a bit of good convincing some of those people to vote next time.

Your professor might give you extra marks for making the assignment something that had meaningful results. And, you'll feel good about yourself for doing something good.

There are lots of interesting historical facts about voting rights so there'd be plenty to search online and talk about. Plenty of close elections where a few votes would have counted as examples. And lots of statistics showing actual turnout among your audience's target age.

Add a handout at the end: voter registration cards for them to fill out on their own and mail in from home!

Good luck!

You should do a public speech on technology: past, present and future. You can cover when the telephone was this huge contraption over a hundred years ago with a circle dial and the ear peace was the small cup-like megaphone. Now we have Razr's and Bluetooths.
Other technology advances:
TVs - black & white to color to flat screen to HDTV
Computers to laptops
VCRs to DVDs to DVRs
Record Players to BoomBoxes to CD players to iPods

There is SOOO much information on technology dating back to over a hundred years ago to ideas for the future.

GOOD LUCK!

"War on Immigration"; "Capitalistic Fountain of Youth"; "The Death of Modern Europe"; "Our First Woman President (should have Divorced Firstly"); "New Mexican President, Same Old Corruption";

Pick something which you are interested in.
Cheerleading, Sports, etc. Pick a topic and discover its most current controversy, then refute it.

Good Luck!

I would talk about immigration. There are lots of things to talk about, and depending on how long your speech has to be, you can cover some historical as well as contemporary examples.
