Is there a website that I can go to that allows me to indicate the 50 or 100 bands that I like, and then they will send me an email whenever these bands line up a concert in my area?

Yup. I do it through ticketmaster.com. Ticketmaster allows you to choose the bands you like and get e-mails sent when that band is in or around town. It's terrific.
Just set up an account - it's completely free, and you will be asked to choose which bands you'd like ticket alerts for:

I also subscribe to the newsletter of the venue nearest me. Most usually have websites, seating info, etc.

Go to ticketmaster! You search for a band, and enter your email address, and they'll tell you when your favorite bands are comin' in your state/area :) It's how I keep track of my favorite bands!

You might try ticketmaster.com. Also if there is a venue close to you where you like to see concerts see if they have a website and sign up for their newsletter.

Add them to your friends on Myspace. Any band you can think of, big-time or small-time, is on there and plugging their shows.
