In other words, how can light get to us from stars millions of light years away in a universe which the Bible claims is only thousands of years old? This would mean that for a 10,000 year old universe, that anything we see happening beyond about 10,000 light years away is actually part of a gigantic picture show of things that HAVE NOT actually happened, showing us objects which may not even exist. What does all this mean to you? Are we being put on thinking there are really other stars and planets out there? Is this just something that is going to happened and we are getting a preview of a new heaven (universe) when this one passes away?

A Light Year is the distance light travels in one year.

The Earth is approximately 93million miles from the sun. Light from the sun takes approximately 8 and 1/3 minutes to reach the Earth, so the sun is approximately 8 1/3 light minutes from the Earth.

If a star is 1million light years from the Earth, then it means the light from that star takes 1million years to reach the Earth. Which means the light from that star that we are seeing today was emitted by the star 1million years ago.

If the universe is only 10,000 years old, why would God manufacture evidence that it is really billions of years old? Answer: He wouldn't. What would be the point?

Well, either that the bible is wrong if you want to take it literally. Some people think that the bible is not meant to be taken literally when it comes to time. Perhaps at least the creation story in Genesis is not literal.

On the other side, it is very hard to say that science could be wrong on this topic. The science used to date distant stars isn't flawless but it is rather rudimentary and if there aren't really stars millions of light years away then that would mean that we made a huge mistake earlier on and that many many things are wrong. It just isn't very likely.

Also, someone I believe tried to say that "light years are shorter than regular years" or something. That is nonsensical since a light year is a measurement of distance, not time... although... it is dependant on time. But the writer of the question seems to know the difference, so no biggie.

The creation story in Genesis is the only one from ancient times that holds up in modern times. Other cultures around the same time had the universe coming into existence after a war of the many gods. Typically the earth and people were made by the winning gods from the body parts of the dead gods. Kinda silly. You have to realize- 1. The intro to Genesis was written partly as a response to the pagan creation myths 2. The creation story in Genesis is poetic 3. The creation in Genesis story teaches us about God, morality, and our place in the universe 4. The creation story in Genesis is not a science lesson. Few poems are. (If any.) I hope this helps. If so, you can avoid future embarrassment by trying to teach science from this or other poetical works. Have a nice day. Pastor Doug Jesus Street Mission

Well if you factor in that the universe is always expanding the things that are now millions of light years away could have been significantly closer 10,000 years ago. Not that I believe that to be true, but it could be something to consider

Personally, I don't think anyone knows - either the Bible people or the scientists. I can say this. As far as I know the Bible does not give the age of the universe. An early bishop, I think his name was Usher, tried to figure it out supposedly using things from the Bible and came up with a ridiculously small figure which no scientists would accept. In my opinion, since it seems we are to be rewarded in the hereafter for believing in certain things, it's obvious that we are not going to get brownie points for believing in things that can be proved. I think the age and origin of the universe is one of them.

ur only thinking from ur point of view on earth in a timeline based on the earths rotation and its revolving around the sun ... if the universe-physical as we know it was slung into existance from another dimension anything is possible .. and also the point in our time from the "7 day creation" until now is figured to be in the 7000 year range ... but what does the Bible say? "in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" ... that wasnt the starting point of the 7 day creation ... in our years that could have been billions from the creation of heavens and earth until God said let there be light on earth ...

No. No one is putting you on. This is just kind of like the
'second age of enlightenment.' Man is beginning to learn more and more about his existence, his history, the world, and the
place that Earth occupies in space. Some things in books are
a retelling of old, old stories. The stories were quite real to the
people who told them to their children and those children's children. It is not prudent (wise) to scoff or make fun of the old
stories as you begin to learn new facts, or recent technologies
bring you new answers to age old questions. Just realize that years and years ago, people knew far less than we do today about a lot of things. Medicines and diseases is a good example.
The age of things, the stars and planets and moons are others.
The trick is to learn as much as you can and keep on learning.
Inside your mind you will slowly begin to sift things and put
each of them into their proper place and proper perspective.

The bible doesn't specifically say how old the universe is. Don't try to read too many things into a book that doesn't claim to be a science textbook

This section is for science, not religion. All I can say is that the bible is wrong and the stars are actually billions of light years away.

Einstein said that space is curved.....Hubble stated that the red shift increases exponentially...therefore:
A star travelling along a curve appears closer than it really is.
example...I have a tube that is curved..the dia. is 12 inches...if I drop a bb into the tube it will travel approx 20+ inches to arrive at a spot 12 inches away from the viewer. I didn't do the math..just estimated the numbers ..but I think you can see where this is going? Hubble/ doppler is measured along the curved path and the visual is ...somebody take it from here...I gotta go pee.
