How about trying to lubricate yourself a bit before tugging at it? Even just a little dab around the opening may ease the discomfort, allowing it to slip out easier than normal.

I think the reason it hurt when you removed it is because it was not ready to come out.
A tampon should be changed every 4-6 hours. Giving a gentle tug on the string will determine whether the tampon is ready to be removed. Once a tampon has absorbed all the blood it is able to, when you tug on the string it will start to come out of your body. If the tampon had only been inside you for a small amount of time, or has not absorbed the amount of blood it can, it will be harder to remove and it will not start to leave your body when you tug on the string.
Another thing, make sure you are relaxed when trying to remove the tampon, otherwise you will unconsciously clench your pelvix muscles and make it harder for the tampon to leave your body. When I remove tampons, I squat with my legs spread wide. I find this to be a comfortable position to be in.
Hope this helps you!

If they hurt and resist a lot when you pull them out, you are not leaving them in long enough to absorb enough fluid. In other words, you're taking them out too soon.
Or you are using a tampon that is too much for your flow.
You need to use a tampon of less absorbancy than what you're using.

They make slim tampons. Try those, and keep it in longer. The risk of Toxic Shock Syndrom is really low these days. Also, insert it straight up and high enough. The slim tampons I am speaking of are called light ones like they make heavy, regular and light.

They shouldn't hurt to take out. Make sure you are relaxed, and not tense or else they won't come out as easy. Just take a deep breath and pull it out slowly, don't force it. Also, maybe you aren't leaving them in long enough? Maybe it wasn't absorbed enough so it hurt you. This could be a possibility but I'm not sure. Make sure you leave them in long enough to absorb enough, but no longer then 4 hours. Goodluck. Sorry I couldn't helpp

You should try two things: the smallest size available and to take them out earlier than usual. That way you can make sure they won´t be so "filled" with blood and enlarged. Good luck.

it happenned to me and since then i have never used tampons. but alot of girls use them and it shouldnt be painful as long as the tampon has been inside long enough so its soaked- so it will be easier to pull out. and you should use the normal size ones, not the big ones, unless its for overnight.

Buy the smallest size, and coat it with Vaseline before inserting, also stand up before pulling out(that way it comes straight down), if you sit you are pulling it at an Angle

I agree with the other ladies. You should try a regular or light flow tampon. There shouldn't be any pain.

If that's the case, you're using too large of a tampon for your flow. Try using a smaller size. If they're dry, they drag on the inside of you when you go to remove them.
