4 answers

16 = C + D this is the total number of animals
40 = 4C + 2D this accounts for all the feet 4 for cows 2 for ducks

rearrange the first equation

C = 16 - D

Substitute this for C in the second equation

40 = 4(16 - D) + 2D

Do the math

40 = 64 - 4D + 2D

40 = 64 - 2D

subtract 40 from both sides and 2D from both sides

2D = 24

D= 12

Substitue D=12 back into the first equation

16 = C + 12

Solve for C

C = 4

There are 12 ducks and 4 cows

Hope that system helps you solve others.

Let d be the number of ducks, and let c be the number of cows. We know that each cow has four feet and each duck has two feet, so we can say that 4c + 2d = 40. Similarly cows and ducks only have one head so we can also say that c + d = 16. Rearranging this we can say that c = 16 - d. Substituting for c in the first equation we get:

4(16 - d) + 2d = 40
64 - 4d + 2d = 40
64 - 40 = 4d - 2d
2d = 24
d = 12.

So there are 12 ducks.

Substituting in the second equation we get

c = 16 - 12
c = 4.

So there are 12 ducks and 4 cows.
