When did it first appear? My daughter is almost six months and has allergies. My dad had infantile asthma that disappeared after allergy shots, my husband had it pretty severe and it went away after dietery changes ten years ago. Sometimes she does this wierd thing where she almost seems like she is hyperventilating...she has only done it a few times. Twice after crying hysterically and once the other day when there was a very cold wind chill.

My husband and friend (who is almost finished with her nursing degree) witnessed it and thought do to the circumstances it was normal. When she was crying her nose was running alot and I could.t tell if she was having trouble breathing or if she was choking on her flem. My friend said, and mother agreed, that the cold wind is hard on their lungs, they aren't used to it. (Now I make sure I cover her face up in the cold) I really want to know what other people's experiences were so I know what to look for...and yes I will talk to the doctor.

My daughter is 9 months and they didn't diagnose it as asthma but when she was five months she would sound really wheezy and you could tell she was having difficulty breathing. I took her to the doctor and they had to give her a shot of steriods in the office to open up her lungs so now she has to take a nebulizer treatment twice a day. They gave her albuterol for if she has an attack it opens her up quickly and she takes pulmicort daily to prevent future attacks. Since it's cold out she takes the treatments a little more often because she has a harder time breathing. So just take her to her doctor and they'll know what to tell you for sure.

It's true that it's difficult to completely diagnose asthma until around the age of two, but make sure you check for (rather the doctor checks for) other obstructions - windpipe, something that perhaps didn't fully develop in utero, bronchial spasms, or even sleep apnea (if your child seems to stop breathing while asleep - totall different from SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome)). Sleep apnea can cause a child to stop breathing for minutes while asleep and can usually go undetected for years, leading to asthmatic symptoms as an adult as well. I pray that all is well and that it's only allergies...good luck and take care :).

Have her checked right away. My son has it and I didnt find out until he was about 5. He also has algeries and he doesnt get bad asthma unless he has a cold. I ended up getting a nebulizer to use at home for when he has trouble breathing. A child can die from asthma so please have this checked.

My son is 2 months old and from 2weeks old he has always sounded congested i took him to two docs they said hes fine and a few days ago i took him to a different pedia. to get his shots and he agreed that hes congested and developing asthma. I now have to give him abutoral 3 x a day (liquid form) and it helps. Talk to your doc about it. You might even want to get a humidifier they have a cute one at wal-mart for $29.97 they have 3 different styles that are really cute for children...a cat, frog or elephant. That might help.
