The language we speak, but used for the educational world, people who are in universities and other centers of learning - think tanks and research jobs.

it refers to the language that is not colorful, filled with analogies, poetic or otherwise colloquial.

It is maybe the opposite of "the vernacular"

English that gets the message across (especially if the reader is not a native English speaker).

Clarity and few ambiguities are the most important.

Academic English is used in the writing of journals, thesis, doctorate dissertations etc. It is often MLA or APA edited and it is (in my opinion) dry, factual and snooze worthy.
