Anyone who wins eight batting titles in the major leagues is certainly deserving of HOF entry.
Why does it matter if he's overweight ? I mean, he is, but so what ?

How dare they put Tony Gwynn in the Hall of Fame. Here's a guy who could take any pitch and get a base hit from it, almost hit .400 a couple times, did things with an air of confidence yet was humble, always cooperated with the media, always cooperated with the fans.
Obviously sarcastic.
It's too bad he never got a ring. Maybe he will someday as a coach.

Of couse he is overweight but early in his career he stole allot of bases also and wasn't always fat, he played Point Guard at San Diego St on the basketball team, as far as the Hall of Fame that is where he belong he is one of the games All Time greatest hitters winning the batting title for like 8 or 9 years in a row, if he don't belong in the Hall of Fame then there should be an Hall of Fame!!!

Are you out of your mind? Tony Gwynn was the best pure hitter of his generation and could argued for that he is the best pure hitter of all-time. Someone with a .338 career average over so many seasons should be in with 100% of the vote. I would put Gwynn in over Ripken.
Being overweight has nothing to do with getting into the hall of fame. Look at Babe Ruth. Or do you think he doesn't deserve to be in either?

Tony GWYNN was elected to the Hall Of Fame and he is one of the greatest hitters of all time.He has gained weight since his playing days and even then he was a big guy. That takes nothing away from his accomplishments and he was a no brainer for the voters. One of the hardest working players in the league and his hard work and preparation paid off as is evident by his career success.

I believe Tony Gwynn to be one of the baseball immortals. The Baseball Writers of America agreed with me on that sentiment. In 2007 Tony Gwynn received 97.6 percent of the eligible votes to be enshrined in the National Baseball HOF, which proves by far that he has impacted the game in a major way. It maybe true that his weight exceeds our physical standards, but you would be hard pressed to convince me that it affected his ability to play the game, or the love that he demonstrated for the game everytime he took the field. To me Tony Gwynn will forever be enshrined as one of baseball's great ambassdors.
Another great thing about Tony Gwynn is his baseball achievments. In 1995 he was honored with the Branch Rickey Award for being the best hitter in MLB. In 1998 he received the Lou Gehrig award. In 1999 he was awarded the Roberto Clemente award for his community work off the field and his excellence on the field.
Tony Gwynn was also an NL all-star 15 times, he has 5 gold gloves, 7 silver slugger awards, 8 batting titles, 3141 hits, and a lifetime batting average of .338. In retrospect, Tony Gwynn deserves everything that is being bestowed upon him.
When I think of Tony Gywnn. I immediately think of a clubhouse leader in the same manner as Lou Gehrig, Ernie Banks, Cal Ripken Jr., Craig Biggio, and Barry Larkin. With free agency these players may be a thing of the past. I feel fortunate to have watched Tony Gwynn play the game, because I can honestly say that I watched one of the greats.

Speaking for the fans of our fair city, Tony is the most beloved sports figure of all time. If the Chargers can get into and win a Super Bowl ring, then LT might have a chance to catch Tony. Now, though, it's Tony in a landslide!

II think its very good that Tony made it to the Hall of Fame. Hes one of the best hitters to play the game. Hitting so consistently for as long as he did was amazing. He is such a nice and stand up guy. Very good team player.

It's a good thing. He was not only a very consistent offensive player throughout his career but a defensive force as well. Erly on in his career he was a steal threat when on the bases. He is a true Hall of Famer.
Being overweight has nothing to do with anything.

Both Gwynn and Ripken Jr. were great choices as they made Hall of Fame contributions to the sport through their respective performances. I was hoping that Goose Gossage would make it -- he just missed -- next year for sure.

I think Gwynn and Ripken made a great class for the hall. They make sure the class level of play is as close a possible and these two guys were a cut above the other guys on the ballot.
