Sit quietly--alone-- spine straight, eyes closed. Breath very slowly and deeply. On the in breath, mouth closed, meditate on the syllable OM. On the out breath, through your mouth, softly say (breathe) the syllables "Gour--rung--gah"
This mantra will purify your heart, still your mind, and help you link up to the Supersoul, Who gives direction to the individual soul.
To connect with your inner self you must become self-aware--Know that you are eternal spirit soul, part and parcel of the Supreme. You are the same in quality, but not in quantity. You are not God--- but your actual identity is a 'spark' of God.
When you connect with your inner self, you will connect with God as well.

i'm not sure exactly what you are looking to achieve but i would suggest yoga as a way to connect to yourself. yoga is a really good way to become aware of your body and mind and the world around you. most yoga classes provide time for quiet meditation which enables you to slow down and think about things deeply. i would also suggest writing in a journal. self-help books can be good as well. some of them have exercises along with the writing, sort of like a workbook, that will help you reflect on yourself. good luck!

Learn to quiet the restless mind, with slow, intentioned deep breathing. In that peaceful space, image an ancient wise person sitting before you. Ask him/her any question you want. Then wait for him/her to answer...Imagine the answers. Do not judge either the question, nor the answer. Do this the same time every night. Imagine the ancient, wise person waiting, with infinite patience, for You. (This is just one of many ways!)
