All of the art for that album features one of the elements. That one is fire. The facelesss man in the desert is earth. The naked woman in a grove is air. The diver is water.

Roger Waters and David Gilmore had been working on this album for quite some time w/o Syd Barrett. Syd's absence was a bit depressing mainly for Waters. Parts of the album was just the fact that Pink Floyd wasn't quite the same with part of it gone.
Waters and Gilmore saw Syd one day and didn't even recognize him at first. Just some dude in their space.
Anyway, so I heard in an interview here on some station in Seattle, Waters really missed Syd being there, and "Wish you were here" and "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" was just a lament to his feelings about everything.
The album cover kid of reflects that. I'm not sure if they are shaking hands in parting, or perhaps as maybe a good to see you shake.
Pink Floyd will always be one of musics most awesome bands.
Musically and lyrically.
