Your router has a built-in firewall. As long as you have the firewall enabled for non-wireless routers or WEP/WPA encryption for wireless routers, you are safe to share any folder on your PCs. By default, File and Printer sharing in Windows 2000/XP shares Null shares, ie. C$.

If you have the router connected as the middle man, it will work fine. You will not suffer speed loss by using it.....

If you are linking the two computers directly, you will need a cross-over cable....

If you match up the wire color codes on the same cable....

Straight-through, the colors will be the same on both ends of the cable.

Cross-over, has two wires crossed over on them..... and usually have the stamp marking for cross over on them.

in the router situation, it is a simple setup.

With cross-over, you will have to modify the routing table on the PCs and use the second NIC to connect them.....

For sharing it is easy....

Right-click on the folder you want to share, and enable sharing and set the security permission on the security tab. Setup a user account on the PC.

When you try to connect to it from the other computer, you will need to use a user account on the machine sharing to get access to the files shared.

Ignore the messages Windows is prompting you with. These are what we call "idiot messages". Every environment is different and the wizard cannot ascertain what is safe or unsafe. Most people with the same type of scenario just share folders on the second computer.
