The appropriate wording here might be Simplify 8x + 4y + 9x
This simply means gather x terms and y terms.
Thus 8x + 4y + 9x = 17x + 4y

Only thing i can do is collect all the like terms together:

8x+9x= 17x

You cannot "solve" it. Although, you can simplify it and the simplfication of it is 17x+4y
