My son drives a 1999 C230 Kompressor. He wants to put after market 17" rims on the car. We are told putting other than Mercedes rims on the car at the same size a manufacturer suggests is asking for trouble. Could someone explain what problems using after market rims would cause?

I looked around a bit, there doesn't seem to be a reason. The wheel on your son's car aren't special so I don't see a reason why it could be bad, maybe it has something to do with warrenty?

Oh, and yeah, I drive a benz too

As long as the new rims are the correct offset and bolt pattern (won't go on if they don't so that's easy) there should be no problems. There are certainly about a million Mercedes driving around L.A. with aftermarket rims on and no problems.
