The concern with eating shrimp is Mercury. Fetus's are very sensitive to the amount of Mercury present in many types of seafood. A serving of shrimp once or twice a month should be fine, but be careful not to overdo it. Also, stay away from Lobster the most. By definition they are a bottom feeder, and have some of the highest concentrations of toxins.

During my pregnancy I ate shrimp and fish. I don't think that one time will affect your baby in an ill way. What my doctor told me was that if you do things in moderation, then you should be fine. I didn't eat fish and shrimp like I did before I was pregnant, but I did eat some. It gave me horrible heart burn, but other than that, I had a healthy baby girl - 8 lbs, 8 oz.
Just be careful. I will tell you as you move along in your pregnancy you will be much more mindful on what goes in your body. It will become second nature for you.
Good luck and congrats!!

Thanks for asking because the subject in question is not the seafood itself, but the mercury and PCBs- toxic chemicals that can be IN the shrimp/seafood. There are a TON of sites (basically all saying the same thing) about the levels of these toxins in the fish and how much children and pregnant women could eat safely. Take a look at the chart below to see that shrimp has undetectable levels of mercury. ON THE OTHER HAND, seafood has very high levels of OMEGA-3's which we lack a lot of in our diet but is essential to a developing baby. But, You can use a safe fish oil or flax seeds to get your omega-3's.

You'll be fine. Like with most things, it's all about moderation. I'm 27 weeks pregnant and have been very occasionally eating all the things they tell you to stay away from. Don't stop your life, just be sensible. For example, I'll enjoy a piece of soft cheese on a cracker at a party, but I won't eat a whole block. Our Mothers and Grandmothers wouldn't have had all of these food worries.

I am a lover of seafood, when I asked my doc at the begining of my pregnancy he said no more than 6-8oz a week! I highly doubt you ate a half a lb of shrimp...you are fine!
